As a security provider, Mountain Alarm protects you against external threats. So, we understand the importance of cybersecurity. A critical component is using proven practices for password hygiene. Our partners at Alarm.com share the following tips to protect your various accounts.
Make Passwords Longer and Complex
If you wash your hands for five seconds, are they really clean? If your password is only five characters, is it really secure? The answer to both is obviously no. You need to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, and your passwords need to be as long and complex as possible.
If you have trouble remembering long, complex passwords, you can try using a passphrase. Pick something easy for you to remember and personal to you like: “#12JohnStocktonRules79!” (if you are a Utah Jazz fan born in 1979).
Use MFA
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires users to enter more information than a simple password—like a code that’s texted to you, or a key from an authentication app—to access an account. Think of it as an extra level of protection that keeps you better and prevents data breaches.
Use a Unique Password for Every Account
We get it. Coming up with long, complicated passwords for each and every account can seem burdensome. But the reality is, if you don’t take the precaution, and your go-to password gets cracked, then all your accounts are vulnerable. And, if your work account gets hacked, then your customer and business accounts may also be exploited.
Luckily, there’s a way to “remember” all those long, complex, and unique passwords and passphrases.
Use a Password Manager
A password manager helps you easily create and store strong passwords. This way, you don’t have to memorize all of your personal and professional passwords. Your password manager can do it for you. There are many reliable apps available for password management.
Monitor Account Activity
Just like obsessively checking your look in the mirror before going out, regularly check your accounts for any unauthorized access or suspicious behavior. The sooner you spot a problem, the sooner you can act to resolve it.
We encourage you to follow these guidelines to protect all your data. If you ever have concerns about the security of your Mountain Alarm or Alarm.com account, please call us at 1-888-349-3455.
